As a young artist Don Hill had the good fortune to work with notables such as Mervyn Moriarty, Arthur Evan Read, Arch Gratton, Charles Ludlow and in particular Frank de Silva with whom he undertook field trips in the Boonah and Kalbar areas working directly from the landscape (Plien Air). This laid the basic ground work for Hill's knowledge of composition and empathy with the landscape. Early on Arthur Evan Read inspired and encouraged him to undertake travels in Europe and the UK so that he could expand his knowledge and appreciation of traditional and modern art.
This Hill did with a fervor and with his base in London he quickly became a Tate and National Gallery Junkie.
Since 2000 Hill has been invited to and undertaken fifteen solo exhibitions in public and commercial galleries throughout Australia. He has also been involved in several group exhibitions and charity projects involving art.
Hill says."My work utilises a visual photographic interpretation of the landscape.
Obvious influences in Hill's work from the mid 1980's onwards to present day are the action and colour field painters of the last century. Aspects which affect Hill's practice is the close relationship Australians have with the beach, inland and surf culture lifestyle. Don says. "It involves us all in some way regardless of where we live or what we do downunder."
